“Hello, Alexandra,” said Marvin, the Jewish insurance agent Alexandra used for years. He was a chubby, endearing man with light eyes and dark hair, and a sexy voice. If Alexandra had never met him in person, she would have fantasized he was an Adonis of sorts. He was a cantor in a local temple.

“Hi Marvin,” Alexandra said. Marvin caught her in the middle of exploring her results on 23andMe, the second set of DNA tests Alexandra took that year. “Did you ever have your DNA tested?” Alexandra asked randomly.

“No,” Marvin answered suspiciously. He probably worried he had some unknown child somewhere himself or that it was a government conspiracy or maybe he was the convicted felon the FBI was looking for. “What makes you ask that?”

“Are you sitting down?” Alexandra asks.

“Yes,” was Marvin getting impatient? Alexandra couldn’t tell because she was such a mess herself. These days, it was hard to care when paranoia kicked in.

“I am Jewish,” whispered Alexandra as though she were hiding in a basement from the gestapo.

There was silence on the other end of the phone.

“What are you talking about?” asked Marvin in a you-sound-ridiculous tone of voice.

“I took a DNA test. My dad is not my dad. My mother had an affair, and I am Jewish and Italian,” Alexandra said, blurting out her newfound truth. Alexandra continued with a rush of emotion and jumbled words. She wouldn’t tell Marvin how much she weighed for her insurance policy, but she was telling him this deep, dark secret.

“Wonderful!” Marvin sounded elated. “You are a landsman.”

“Do you know what a landsman means?” asked Marvin.

“Yes,” Alexandra replied. “It means compatriot. That was also my married name for eighteen years with the wasband.”
